Pirates of the Caribbean Films
When rumors about a film inspired by the Disney theme park first began in 2002, many thought the move was a ploy by Disney to promote its theme park ride. Many were concerned that pirate movies such as Cutthroat Island and movies based on Disney attractions such as "The Country
Bears" had previously not done well at the box office. Either way, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, starring Johnny Depp (Captain Jack Sparrow), opened in theaters on July 9, 2003 and ultimately grossed US $653 million throughout the world, easily becoming one of the top twenty-five global box office earners of all time.
To promote the release of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest", and to bring the ride up-to-date, animatronic likenesses of Captain Jack
Sparrow and Captain Barbossa were included in the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom attractions, along with new special effects, although the overall ride remains the same.
The success of the first film led to the production of two additional films with mostly the same cast. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" opened on July of 2006, and swiftly broke several records, including the quickest $US 100 million box office gross. "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End", the the
trilogy's final film, was created at the same time as Dead Man's Chest and is scheduled to be released in late May of 2007.
